英検受験の皆さん、映画の一シーンからです (Nolanの言葉の贈り物(5): Inch by Inch)

さあ、英検受験の皆さん、残りも少なくなってきましたね。今日は、映画の一コマからリスニングの特訓、そして何よりも1点でも、0.5点でも捻り出すためのメンタルのトレーニングです♪

フットボールが大好きなアメリカ人の中ではInspirational、そしてMotivational (気持ちを鼓舞し、モチベーションを高める) なスピーチと言われ、この映画のファンも少なくありません。私自身は、映画全体としての出来はもう一つだと思いましたが、後半は良いシーンが続きます。特にこの場面は、何度見ても目頭が熱くなります。

オリバー・ストーン監督による「Any Given Sunday」。アル･パチーノが主役のコーチ･ D'Amato役を演じます。あと私が好きな俳優、デニス･ディエイドが、このシーンで印象的です。

それでは行きましょう！スクリプトは最後に入れました。いくつか使える表現も学べますよ♪

Inch by Inch, Play by Play

フットボールは基本的には、100ヤード離れたゴールにお互いラグビーと同じような楕円体のボールを持ち込むサッカーのような競技です。得点するためには10ヤードから最大100ヤード近くボールを運ぶ必要があります。したがって、プレーヤも観客も、基本的にヤード単位で陣地とボールの位置を捉えます。

しかし、この場面でコーチであるD'Amatoは、大舞台を前に選手たちに檄を飛ばします。彼自身の山あり谷ありの人生と重ねながら、人生もフットボールも"game of inches"と説きます。ちょっとの違いで人生も試合も、良い方向にも悪い方向にも向かいます。

でも、実はこうした瞬間は人生でも試合でもいたる場面で現れ、これをいかにものにできるかで最終的な結果が大きく変わってきます。 1インチに徹底的にこだわり、積み重ねていくことで、これが1ヤード、10ヤードとボールを進め、最終的には得点、そして勝利へとつながっていくんだと。

さて、皆さんも

いかがでしょう? アメリカ人にも人気のある場面ですが、日本でもよく言われていることと似ていますね。

英検でもTOEICでも、いきなり高得点が転がり込んで来るわけではありません。目先の1問、1問を、そして先日書いたように1点でも、確率的には0.5点でもとこれを積み重ねていくことで合格点(あるいはTOEICなら目標点数)に近づけていくということでしょうか。

そしてこれは何も英検やTOEICに限りません。

You know, when you get old, in life, things get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second.

On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the fucking difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!

I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life anymore it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that's what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it.

You've got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. Your gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it comes down to it your gonna do the same for him.

That's a team, gentlemen, and either, we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

【簡単にルールの説明を追加】

もう少し記載するとサッカーとの違いは攻撃権というものがあって、4回の攻撃で10ヤード以上前進すると攻撃権をキープできますが、だめだと相手に攻撃権が移ります。その他、守備側が相手のパスをダイレクトのキャッチ(Intercept)したり、攻撃側がボールを落としたもの(Fumble)を拾った場合も攻撃権が移ります(Turnover)。フットボールでは多くの場合、プレイごとに時計が止まるのですが、InterceptやFumbleのrecoverが起きた場合は時計が止まることなく、それまで守備だったチームの逆襲が開始されます。司令塔クオーターバックへのタックルの他、こうしたスリリングなTurnoverがフットボールの醍醐味となります。
